Gloucester grew up as an important commercial centre back in medieval times when its location on the Severn and strategic importance as an important crossing, enabled it to grow as the major commercial city of the area. The city centre has still many historical buildings, and the great Cathedral, on college green, has an ancient and interesting history.
The City developed as a major port, despite its inland location, the River Severn providing its connection to the worlds oceans, and the extensive network of inland canals, linked Gloucester to the industrial might of the English Midlands
These Docks and warehouses have been extensively redeveloped, and now the area is a popular museum and tourist area
